Things to do in Monterey

Table of Contents

Ahoy, mateys! If you’re planning a trip to Monterey, I want to tell you about my favorite activities to enjoy here. As a boat captain who’s sailed these waters for years, I can tell you that there’s no shortage of fun things to do here on and off the water. Here are my top 5 reccomendations for activities to do while visiting Monterey.

1. Take a Sailing Cruise

Sailing is a quiet and eco-friendly way to cruise the bay. If you’re looking for a relaxing ride with complimentary beverages, check out a catamaran sailing cruise at Sail Monterey. There is nothing quite like the magic of soaring across the water by the power of the wind, so give it a try while on your visit. While sailing, look out for sea lions, spot whales and dolphins, and take in the views of the famous Cannery Row and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. For those who are interested in learning to sail, Sail Monterery also offers sailing lessons! Click here to visit Sail Monterey’s homepage for more information and to book a sailing cruise online!

Visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is a world-class aquarium that’s home to over 35,000 creatures from the sea. As a captain, I’ve seen some of the most beautiful marine life up close, but this aquarium has it all – from playful sea otters and to the awe-inspiring giant octopuses and hammerhead sharks. The aquarium also has educational programs, live animal feedings, and interactive exhibits for kids and adults alike. Click here to visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Website

Go Whale Watching

The waters around Monterey Bay are home to a variety of whale species, including humpback whales, gray whales, blue whales, and killer whales. Book a whale watching tour and witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. It’s truly an unforgettable experience, and I never get tired of seeing these incredible animals on the bay. Visit the Monterey Fishermans Wharf website for more information.

Explore Cannery Row

Cannery Row is a historic district that’s been transformed into a lively hub of shops, restaurants, and attractions. As a captain, I’ve spent much time enjoying the views of cannery row from land and sea. Take a stroll along the waterfront, visit the local shops, and indulge in some delicious seafood at one of the many restaurants. You can also rent a bike or a surrey and explore the area at your own pace. Click here to discover more about Cannery Row online.

Hike in Point Lobos

Point Lobos State Natural Reserve is a natural wonder that’s worth visiting. The park offers a range of hiking trails that wind through stunning coastal landscapes, rocky cliffs, and Cypress groves. You can spot sea lions, harbor seals, and a variety of bird species here while enjoying the walk. The park is also home to the famous “China Cove,” a secluded beach that’s perfect for a picnic or a swim. Dogs and pets are not allowed in Point Lobos, so leave your furry friend at home if you plan to do this specific hike. Click here to read more about Point Lobos.

Monterey is a place that can excite landlubbers and seafaring folks alike . From sailing and whale watching to exploring the local attractions and hikes, there’s never a dull moment here. So come aboard, explore the bay, and discover the beauty of this magical place!
