Serving Monterey, Carmel, Pacific Grove, Santa Cruz families, here are our most commonly asked questions or FAQs.
“Is scattering ashes at sea legal in California?” – Yes, there are some very simple rules to follow, and our captains can help you ensure this process is done legally.
“Where can ashes be scattered in Monterey Bay?” – Ashes simply may NOT not be scattered on beaches, tide pools or piers. Acceptable locations include out on the Monterey Bay about 3 miles from shore. You can get views of Pebble Beach, Carmel Bay, Cypress Point, Lovers Point, Point Pinos, and more.
“How many guests can join a burial at sea?” – It depends on which vessel you choose, the catamaran can accomodate up to 24 passengers, while the keelboat/monohull can only accomodate 6 total passengers.
“Do you provide certificates or coordinates of the scattering?” – Your captain can provide you with GPS coordinates of the location in which your ceremoney takes place. So you can always remember and later search for the exact location of your ceremony
“What happens if we want a religious or non-religious service?” – Most families choose a simple, casual time together—sharing words, memories, or quiet reflection as the ashes are scattered at sea. You’re welcome to make the moment your own, whether that means reading poetry, playing music, or simply enjoying the peace of the ocean. If you prefer a more structured service, you may also invite a qualified individual, such as a clergy member, celebrant, or family spokesperson, to lead the ceremony. Our crew will respectfully accommodate your wishes and help create a meaningful experience, whether religious or non-religious.
